So here’s the job situation: I have picked up a temporary job working at Liberty Tax to tide me over until I (hopefully) hear back from the Census people (apparently it might be a bit of time, I’m hopeful though as I scored 100% on the test), and that will tide me over until either the freelance web stuff picks up or I can land a more permanent web job. I am moving forward on my current Drupal project, though, went to a meeting last week and checked out some CNC routers. Once that’s done, I’ve got a giant list of side projects to work on portfolio-building until I can land something else.

And, I’m sick. Came down with it yesterday. Might be cold or flu, not really sure. Headache, fever, chills, fatigue, sore throat, occasional cough. And I threw up today. Feels really weird to have things in my stomach. I think that my stomach’s weakening with age. I didn’t use to have stomach queasiness with illness, but lately I’ve gotten that. Also, in the last few years I’ve started experiencing queasy stomach after roller coaster rides. No good at all! Also no good is my period this time around. It’s really awful to have bad cramps while also sick. I’m still playing around with giving myself doses of zinc to help out. I wish zinc didn’t make me nauseas, and I need to drill into my skull that 15 minutes of nausea for a few days is a lot better then days of devastating pain.

Oh, and that avocado contest I entered? I did not win. Well, I did win a cookbook and a t-shirt, both of which should come in the mail at some point, but no dollars. It’s all good, though, I felt like I learned a great deal of Flash, which is something.

So I start my period in four days. And thus, I start taking zinc today. According to various things I’ve been reading online, I can all but avoid the evil painful cramps I generally have by taking 30-90 mg of zing starting a few days before my period begins. The unfortunate side effect of this is the nausea. I just took a pill not too long ago, and my stomach is already churning and I kinda want to throw up. Ah, zinc. However, if this works, having 15 minutes of nausea a few times a day for 3-4 days is significantly better then having 48 hours of incapacitating pain!

So yesterday was supposed to involve going biking around Williamsburg and going to a Greek festival. But then, the ole groin kicked in. I am generally of the idea that I’ll just drug myself when I get cramps and do whatever I was planning on doing, as I hate to just give 1/15 of my life over to pain, but after 6 painkillers was having not nearly as much effect as I’d like, I decided to call it off and lie around achy and dopey all day/evening instead. It was maddening, it felt like Wolverine is attempting to remove my ovaries. Today was better, at least.

I looked around online, and found research that indicates that taking zinc 1-4 days preceding the onset of menstruation will greatly reduce sever cramps. Has anyone else tried this? Zinc has a really bad habit of making me feel nauseous, but it might be worth it to feel nausea for a half an hour for 4 days to avoid severe pain.

I really hate cramps.

There are multiple ways of dealing with them. And by ‘multiple’, I mean 3. The first is more of a ‘suck it up and accept the pain’ sort of thing. It doesn’t get me too far. I really hate taking painkillers on a regular basis just on general principle, but sometimes those babies are just necessary. Which brings me to the second way of dealing. This involving downing 2-3 advil every 3-4 hours, and just being a bit dopey and hazy all day. I really hate how painkillers always make me like that. In any case, I usually stick to that method for most months. Occasionally, if the pain is really bad, I’ll kick it up a notch and pull out one of those muscle relaxers from when I got hit by that car a year or so ago. Problem with those things is that eventually the cramps go away, but I’m still dopey and completely out of it. Just not too practical.

And thus comes the last method. It’s called rum. Kills pain, and is quite distracting. So distracting, in fact, that it causes me to write posts about menstrual cramps when it’s quite past my bedtime. D’oh!
